Poetry: My New Found Inspiration
For the past month or so, I have been delving into poetry, and after a lesson I learned in my Writing in the Secondary School course, I feel like this might be a new passion of mine. I have written poetry in the past, mostly for other classes like Study in the Verse, and some on my spare time, but nothing to the extent that I felt meant anything. But when I was told to write a For My People Poem, which entails writing a poem about a group of people you belong to, whether it's family, race, culture, etc, I found that I might actually be onto something. I decided to write about my people that are based around the LGBTQ community, because I feel like that is a major part in my life. I used to be so ashamed of who I was when I first came out as a homosexual, but as the years progressed, I found a good social network that helped me out through those rough times. They gave me great advice, and made me realize I was not alone, so this poem was for them.
I had no idea that we were going to be reading the poems out loud in class, so I was extremely uncomfortable and hesitant about it at first. But once I started reading it, the fear disappeared, and I found myself embracing what I was reading. Once I got all the feedback from my fellow peers, I was so proud of myself for what I wrote. One of the feedbacks I got was that this was a publishable work, and I was like "wait....what?" I had no idea that this hit so many different cords in me and some other people, and I find that maybe I can keep doing this and find a sense of release in poetry. I feel so proud of this poem, and I decided to title it Soon. The title is Soon because it discusses some of the positives and negatives that are correlated in the LGBT community, although they are not all of the problems and positives, they embrace so many different kinds of people. Soon references to the hope of peace and equality that I know we all hope to achieve in the upcoming days, months, years. So I am proud of this poem, and I am happy that people enjoyed what I had to say, because my feelings came out strong through this poem.
For My People Poem Titled: Soon
This is for my,
Fabulous,
Let me Resay that.
FABULOUS people
A word of meaning
Referring to the strong,
Intelligent,
Expressive,
Impressive,
Repressive
People of “wrong” orientation
To my men who wear heels,
And have better legs than most women,
In these pumps
Who strut their stuff
And can wear make up
That just makes you want to shout
FIERCE,
And maybe do a z-snap
Because they don’t give a damn people
To my closeted brethren,
In the dark,
Lonely,
Regretful,
Repressful
Repenting for their sinsful
Searching for meaning,
May your voice be heard,
This is for my LGBTQ,
And not the LGBTQ you think,
That’s Loud
Great
Baffling
Tremendous
And Quite Unique
My Allies,
My acceptance,
Your acceptance,
The shoulder to cry on,
The appreciation,
The gratitude,
One more life worth living
This is for my people,
A family worth a thousand words,
Or not enough,
Not to mention lots of glitter,
And Madonna in the background,
Enjoying the Pride
Passion,
Understanding
Soon to be free
Hope to be
Equality
Hopefully,
Soon.
